Savina Raynaud

Savina Raynaud has dedicated, and is continuing to dedicate, her research to the philosophy of language and linguistic theory.

1) Her interests were cultivated primarily from a historiographical perspective, focusing on the
study of authors and individuals in the scientific field who were crucial to the establishment of the
language sciences:

  • Wilhelm von Humboldt,

  • Anton Marty,

  • Gottlob Frege,

  • Karl Bühler,

  • The Prague Linguistic Circle.

2) She has gradually developed her research from the theoretical perspective with particular
reference to:

  • Intentionality and the constraints of psychologism (in Marty);

  • Lexical units and their actualisation in texts;

  • The sermon and the gestalt configuration of statements;

  • Judgment and truth values as denoted by their related assertive statements (in Frege);

  • The centrality of the relationship of identity and identification in semantics and the consequent assimilation of statements in the form of equations, as well as conceptual functions (in Frege);

  • The role of inner linguistic form (in Marty and Humboldt), i.e. the endolinguistic infrastructure which is active in the relationship between signifier and signified, which is also an expression of cultural specificity in communities of speakers;

  • Semiotics pertaining to new information and communications technology;

  • Semantic theory and philosophical, as well as linguistic terminology.

  1. She has proposed a unified treatment of the semantics of deixis, which is documented from the historiographical perspective and argued on a theoretical level. She has edited a publication that not only reconstructs the status quaestionis through collected and translated texts, but also provides critical assessment. This demonstrates a negative impact in terms of restraining the progress of knowledge, of excessive specialisation, intradisciplinary closure and insufficient awareness of the epistemology of the relevant areas of research: logic, semiotics, glottology, general linguistics, ontology and metaphysics.

  2. The regular participation in her group activities, via periodic conferences of the Society of Philosophy of Language and its presidency from 2004 to 2008, have given her the opportunity to:

  1. redirect semantico-pragmatic research, developed mainly on the grounds of ordinary language, to the language of philosophy;
  1. demonstrate the heuristic ability of semantics analysis of the classical texts regarding philosophical thought for historiographical purposes, analyses which allow the delivery of clearer theoretical terms for the identification of problems and their solutions, while dispelling, as such, the ongoing prejudice - from the Neopositivist era up to, and including, the present - of the anti-metaphysics of the philosophy of language;
  2. draw on the resources of new technologies - computational linguistics - to provide investigation of rigorous, verifiable and, as far as possible, automated methodologies.

She was a researcher in the scientific disciplinary L-LIN/Olsector (Glottology and Linguistics) from 1984 to 1994, at the campus at Brescia Catholic University of the Sacred Heart. The primary goal is the creation of the Index Thomisticus Treebank [ITTB: http://itreebank.marginalia.it/ ], namely of analytical annotation at the syntactic level, which is now integrated at the semantic-pragmatic level, of the Latin texts of Aquinas, according the methods of the Prague school of computational Linguistics (UFAL).
